Las Vegas welcomed more than 42 million visitors in 2015, marking another record-breaking year for visitation and 2016 is already off to a great start.
Tourism is the lifeblood of the Las Vegas economy and no other city on earth can match our ability to attract visitors. In addition to our city’s reputation as the leading destination for world-class dining, shopping and entertainment, Las Vegas is a serious place to do business.
Since there is always something new to experience here, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority identified a need to create the Las Vegas Host Committee, which provides year-round support to promote the ongoing events our city has to offer, including citywide conventions and special events. So far this year, our Host Committee ambassadors have had a lot to celebrate.
This year’s convention calendar kicked off with a strong start with CES® 2016 in Las Vegas. This year’s event attracted an estimated 165,000 attendees from 150 countries. CES® 2016 is known as the world’s gathering place for all who thrive on the business of consumer technologies. This year’s show stretched across Las Vegas from Jan. 6-9, with more than 3,600 exhibiting companies utilizing a record-breaking 2.4 million square feet of exhibit space. Some of the most talked about items at CES ®2016 included virtual reality technologies, driverless vehicles and drones.
Following CES is a full calendar of events in the coming months, attracting more than 782,000 business visitors and pumping more than $661 million into the local economy.
MAGIC takes center stage for Las Vegas convention activity Feb. 16-18. The event is considered the world’s largest fashion marketplace with more than 85,000 attendees heading to the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) and Mandalay Bay for the latest trends in apparel, footwear, accessories and manufacturing. The MAGIC Marketplace Spring Show is expected to generate $71.9 million in direct visitor spending.
Get ready to shop until you drop! ASDMARKETWeek returns to the LVCC Feb. 28-March 2. Held twice annually in Las Vegas, ASD MARKETWeek brings the world’s widest variety of merchandise together in one efficient consumer-goods trade show. More than 50,000 people are expected to attend the event, providing an estimated $42.3 million in direct visitor spending.
In addition to conventions and trade shows, sporting events also mean big business for Las Vegas. The Big Game between the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers is sure to attract sports fans to our city for viewing parties and sports wagering. I predict the Caroline Panthers will take home the title this year.
An estimated 150,000 racing fans are expected in Las Vegas March 4-6 for 2016 NASCAR Weekend at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Fans can see their favorite drivers and experience the one-of-a-kind Neon Garage featuring live music and entertainment all weekend long. The event weekend includes the Kobalt 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race, the Boyd Gaming 300 NASCAR Xfinity Series race and Stratosphere Pole Day.
The sports madness continues in March, with a number of college basketball tournaments underway. To celebrate the excitement, I’ll be traveling around town on behalf of the Las Vegas Host Committee during the games with my iconic showgirls in tow. We’ll surprise basketball fans and thank them for traveling to Las Vegas to cheer on their favorite teams. Keep an eye out for coming announcements and ways to get involved.
