Reflecting back on the 114th Congress, I am proud to report that several of my initiatives made it across the finish line and were sent to the President’s desk to be signed into law. Whether it be through VA improvements, infrastructure and water resource accomplishments, or making progress toward health care reform, I have continuously kept Nevada’s best interests in mind and at the forefront of my legislative efforts.
As a member of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee and as Co-Chair of the Senate VA Backlog Working Group, I was pleased Congress passed my legislative efforts that support our veterans. These priorities will advance the needs of our disabled veterans, service members transitioning out of the military, and every member of the Armed Forces currently serving at home and abroad. Additionally, I successfully pushed to address the safety and quality of care at the Reno VA Medical Center by creating a better and more efficient system to handle surges in disability claims so veterans don’t experience a backlog. One of my most essential responsibilities is to serve as the leading voice for the 300,000 veterans in our state and continue advocating on behalf of our nation’s heroes.
Furthermore, a few of my initiatives were also included in the final version of the 21st Century Cures Act, which was recently signed into law by the President. These efforts focused on ensuring that Medicare benefits continue to provide meaningful coverage to seniors and protecting important health care benefits for current and future retirees. Additionally, my efforts will provide federal grants to assist states in developing programs to better screen and treat maternal depression.
Successfully passing these bills will surely set the tone for the upcoming Congress, which meets January 3, 2017. As your U.S. Senator, I will continue introducing and supporting legislative proposals that will greatly benefit Americans, especially Nevadans. Should you or a fellow Nevadan have any questions or concerns, my staff and I would be happy to assist you.
