The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority(LVCVA) is tasked with promoting our fabulous city as the world’s premier destination for both leisure and business travel. Tourism is the lifeblood of our economy, supporting nearly half the jobs in the area and generating $50 billion in economic activity each year.
It’s important to stay up-to-date on all of the latest local happenings because being a great place to visit makes Las Vegas a great place to live. In 2015, Las Vegas had a lot to celebrate and next year is already shaping up to be one for the record books! Here are some major milestones on the horizon for our city in the year ahead.
Breaking the Record for Visitation… Again
In 2014, Las Vegas reached a historic milestone, exceeding 40 million visitors for the first time. The previous record was set in 2012 with more than 39 million tourists. The tourism industry in Southern Nevada continues to expand and we are on pace to break the visitation record again this year.
Attracting more visitors is critical to the continued growth and success of our city. International visitation continues to be a key target for growth, as these visitors tend to stay longer and spend more. More than 6.2 million international travelers visited Las Vegas in 2014, pumping more than $8.7 billion into the local economy.
Several international airline carriers including Norwegian Air, Eurowings and WestJet have recently announced new airline service to Las Vegas. These flights will provide new routes from Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Canada. Additionally, McCarran International Airport announced it will double the number of gates available to international air carriers by early 2017.
All eyes will be on Las Vegas in the fall of 2016. The LVCVA partnered with the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) to submit a bid to serve as one of four host cities for the 2016 vice-presidential and presidential debates. The Commission on Presidential Debates selected Las Vegas to host the final 2016 Presidential Debate on October 19, 2016. Hosting a presidential debate will continue to increase the global visibility of Las Vegas and further our city’s reputation as a serious place to do business.
Las Vegas Convention Center District
With more than 22,000 meetings held in Las Vegas annually, the meetings and convention industry is crucial to Southern Nevada’s economic success. In order to preserve Las Vegas’ reputation as the leading trade show destination in North America, the LVCVA is investing in the future with the Las Vegas Convention Center District (LVCCD). Development of the LVCCD is expected to create thousands of jobs, pump billions of dollars into the local economy.
In 2016, the LVCVA will move forward with the demolition of the LVCVA-owned Riviera to make way for rentable exhibit space for shows and events with outdoor exhibits.
Entertainment Capital Of The World
Our city is home to some of the world’s best resorts, culinary venues, entertainment, special events, spas, golf courses and the list goes on. One of the many benefits of living in Las Vegas is the opportunity to experience world-class entertainment and activities 365 days a year in our own backyard!
In 2016, MGM Resorts International and AEG will open the Las Vegas Arena, a 20,000-seat $375 million arena on the Strip. Some major headliners who have already announced performances at the new arena include, George Straight, Garth Brooks, Janet Jackson and The Killers. The 2016 Professional Bull Riders World Finals will also take place at the Las Vegas Arena.
In 2016, Las Vegas will also be home to special events like the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, Rock in Rio and Life is Beautiful. High-profile events like these help attract hundreds of thousands of people to Las Vegas.
