I believe it is important for all senior citizens to have a clear understanding of the benefits they qualify for, as well as knowledge on resources helpful in navigating these benefits. As I travel around the state, I realize many are unaware of the different programs created to assist our senior citizens. Programs such as Medicare are essential in maintaining the health of older Americans without overwhelming medical costs. My seats on the Special Committee on Aging and the Senate Committee on Finance allow me to strengthen and protect this program.
One service available to assist the elderly in Nevada with Medicare is the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) provided by the Aging and Disability Services Division of the Department of Health and Human Services. This program is a fantastic resource and responds to more than 1,000 phone calls every month from beneficiaries and family members regarding Medicare. Trained SHIP volunteers are available across the state to help those in need. Beneficiaries can sign up for free one-on-one counseling sessions on topics including Medicare, supplemental health insurance, and long-term care options. The volunteers offer guidance on health insurance needs and advise on important decisions pertaining to long-term care insurance. Important information on meetings, seminars, classes, health fairs, and senior fairs pertaining to Medicare is available through SHIP.
The program also offers assistance with Medicare Part D, which is a prescription drug benefit plan. Open enrollment to sign up for this program will be in-between October 15th and December 7th. Although this is later on in the year, I feel it is important all seniors are prepared beforehand. SHIP is available to assist both current beneficiaries of Medicare Part D and those interested in the program.
