Do you want to get into better shape and become a better hiker in 2017? Great! The best way to do this is to set a goal. Not just any goal though. It must be a challenging goal; it must be a measurable goal, and a realistic goal for you.
I have a goal for you: Join the 52 Peak Club and hike the best 52 peaks around Las Vegas, NV. Currently, over 1,000 hikers are taking the challenge. They range in age from 21 to 77 years old. The club offers over 50 hikes per month! You join other hikers and at least one leader as the group hikes to one of the 52 peaks.
What will you gain by joining the 52 Peak Club? Recently a lady became a 53er, a hiker who has hiked all 52 peaks. Here’s her experience hiking with the 52 Peak Club:
“By hiking the 52 Peaks, you as an individual grow in strength, in courage, in skill, and you come to not only believe in yourself, but accomplish more than you ever thought possible. Your self-reliance and self-confidence increase, and you become a stronger person mentally, emotionally, and physically. This is an amazing benefit of joining the 52 Peak Club and earning cards – you become a better person.
It doesn’t end there, though – you also develop your skills in interdependence. None of us can do this alone. Every hike is a group effort – full of challenges, risks, and chances to come together and work as a team to overcome any obstacles thrown in our paths. We share experiences with each other – joys, tears, laughter, excitement, sadness, and the awe and wonderment of exploring these amazing places. We forge friendships on these hikes, deep and lasting bonds with each other that can only come from shared experiences in these incredible challenges. You become close to your fellow hikers – you learn how to help other people, and you learn how to accept help from other people.
For me, joining the 52 Peak Club ranks up there as one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life thus far. I’ve found friendships that I will cherish my entire life, I’ve overcome challenges that I never thought possible, and I’ve experienced a world of wonder in nature that I had no idea existed. My life has been immeasurably improved by these experiences – and I’m left with an insatiable desire to see more, to experience more, and to continue this journey. Where it will take me, I’m not sure – but I know that I’ll be sharing this journey with friends, and that’s a wonderful thing to know.”
Many members feel the same way. You will also learn about the peaks around Las Vegas, hiking safety, and you can even learn to rappel.
The Nuts and Bolts:
Hikes are scheduled through Meetup.com. (There are thousands of different Meetup groups – don’t worry I will make sure you join the correct one.) Once you join Meetup you can see upcoming hikes and sign up for them. Each hike description on Meetup includes: Name of the hike, time to complete the hike, how many miles, how much elevation gain, and the difficulty of the hike (1-5). Also included is the meeting time and meeting location. It is very well organized.
The 52 Peak Club is based on a deck of cards. This is Vegas! Each time you hike to the peak with the group you earn a card. The goal is to earn all 52 cards and become a 53er.
There is no time limit on becoming 53er.
The 52 Peak Club was created in March of 2011, by Branch Whitney, author of several hiking guidebooks. Branch runs the club and leads hikes. There are over 30 other leaders in the 52 Peak Club. The number one priority is safety.
What you need to do now:
First, go to this website to learn more about the 52 Peak Club: www.52PeakClub.com.
Check out the FAQs page: http://www.52peakclub.com/faqs.html
If this is a challenge that appeals to you, sign up. You will receive an email explaining what to do next. Don’t worry everything is very organized.
The most important thing you can do is join a hike once you sign up. Too many people sign up for things (the gym, yoga, dance lessons etc.) and never show up.
Note: Since this is an advance hiking club, everyone must take a fitness survey. The link to the fitness survey can easily be found on the 52 Peak Website.
Hope to see you on a hike. +
