If you’ve lived in Las Vegas for any amount of time, you’ve likely seen me out on the town, showgirls in tow and martini in hand enjoying and promoting the town that I love.
After more than 50 years in Las Vegas, I’ve had the fortune of meeting many fascinating people from around the globe and have countless conversations about my experiences in this one-of-a-kind city. As I reflect on these talks, one question comes to mind that I’m asked more than any other- “Do you miss being Mayor of Las Vegas?”
Our city has a special place in political history as I am the only mayor in the Unites States to swear in a spouse as his or her successor. That momentous occasion took place in 2011 and Carolyn has been doing a phenomenal job ever since.
Getting back to whether I miss being Mayor of Las Vegas, the truth is, I miss it every single day but I sincerely believe I have the best job in the world as Chairman of the Las Vegas Host Committee and official Ambassador of Las Vegas.
In 2011, another important thing happened for our city, and my career, with the creation of the Las Vegas Host Committee. The Host Committee is a permanent body charged with welcoming guests and engaging the local community in support of the tourism industry and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA).
The Host Committee is unique because it is the only permanent host committee. Most cities create host committees around event-specific initiatives like the Super Bowl or the Olympics. The LVCVA identified a need for year-round support to promote the ongoing events our city has to offer. In 2015, Las Vegas welcomed a record-breaking 42.3 million visitors and there is always something new to experience in our city!
You can often find me delivering a welcome speech at important Las Vegas events, greeting visitors and mingling with people who love Las Vegas as much as I do. For me, there’s no slowing down in sight and I hope you’ll join me in spreading the word of how wonderful our city is by signing up as an official ambassador of the Las Vegas Host Committee.
I also currently have an “Ask Oscar” segment on the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority YouTube “LV360” page that airs on local city and county public access channels. The Las Vegas Host Committee makes an effort to keep our community up-to-date on all of the latest news related to tourism in our city. If you are internet savvy this is a useful tool for learning about the exciting things happening in Southern Nevada with videos detailing the most recent travel and tourism trends in Las Vegas. Submit your question to email@example.com.
We’re always looking for new ambassadors to help spread the importance of tourism and support the many events our city has to offer. Anyone from the community can become an ambassador by registering on our website www.lvcva.com/host or emailing our office at firstname.lastname@example.org. It costs nothing other than your commitment to better our community. We’ll provide you with materials to help you stay up-to-date on the latest tourism-related news and the events happening in Southern Nevada.
I’m looking forward to an action-packed year supporting our number one industry- tourism! Cheers! +
